At Selby Primary School we offer students in Prep the opportunity to engage in investigations, guided by their interests and linked to curriculum objectives. Investigations encourages students to work collaboratively as they build on their critical thinking, questioning, creative thinking and a love and passion for learning.
Investigations is well established at Selby and allows students to engage in “play-based” learning inspired by the Walker Learning Approach which is based upon decades of research. This approach to learning combines the need for children to be active participants in their learning through hands on and creative exploration while still participating in formal instruction. There is explicit teaching and development of not only literacy and numeracy skills and knowledge but also a range of vital social, emotional and life skills. This approach to learning supports Preps in their transition to school as they become more connected to their peers and the learning environment at Selby.
