Programs - Visual Arts
At Selby, we provide enriching and enjoyable experiences through a vast range of techniques and media. We cater for the varying learning styles and abilities of different children and foster a love of art through exploration and participation.
We encourage and support each child in their efforts and recognise value in the process as well as the final product. Art education cultivates the whole child: An effective Arts program engages students in a process that helps them develop self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperation, and self-motivation.
Respect for others and the different ways they have of thinking, working, and expressing themselves is developed through art. The opportunity to participate fully in a sequential and stimulating Arts program provides children with important tools with which they can convey ideas, feelings and beliefs.
It develops intuition, reasoning, imagination and dexterity, equipping each child with a vast and powerful range of strategies for self-expression and communication. Children learn to problem solve and make decisions. Through art they learn many of the skills and values necessary for success in life.
What’s happening in the Art room this term?
Clay is always a highlight of Term 3 with children first being given the opportunity to ‘play with clay’ and experience its properties and capabilities. They will then learn or revise skills such as kneading, rolling, hollowing and joining. Each child will make a piece that will be fired.
We will also be doing some work with Threads and Textiles using material, hessian, wool, rope and some simple stitching.
Accuracy in cutting and pasting and the development of the use of line and pattern will continue to be developed through a variety of drawing, painting and collage activities.
